Revealing the Next Forefront in Institutional Leadership

Shedd Aquarium

One of the world’s largest aquariums sought Foresight’s support to solidify their position as sustainability leaders by honing their strategy for assessing difficult-to-measure environmental impacts, in areas such as purchasing, animal medicines and public awareness of the museum’s sustainability-related efforts. We consulted with 13 stakeholders across Shedd’s departments involved in the collection of sustainability-related metrics to develop a rich, systems-based understanding of their challenges in pursuing greater sustainability. We supplemented this effort with insights from peer institutions and a thorough review of relevant and transferrable sustainability measurement standards from multiple industries.

The challenge to further embed and integrate institutional sustainability priorities required coordinated leadership, communications, management and data collection. Foresight recommended a transformative and holistic approach to accountability including a new, cross-departmental measurement tool and process, and a collaboratively developed implementation and communications plan to activate staff leadership and engagement.
