With a surge in interest, and potential decrease in available resources, however, aligning needs with support has never been more important. Enter the Growing Forward project. We are seeking undergraduate students for the position of Recycling Assistant for 15-20 hours a week during the semester and 35-40 hours/week during the summer. The hourly rate is $8.68.

Responsibilities will include:
Generating awareness of and promoting campus recycling, monitoring recycling bins’ location, condition and signage, installation and placement of bins in existing and new locations, maintenance of records on recycled materials, performing other duties as assigned.

Must have a valid IL Driver’s License Interested applicants, please submit resume and COVER LETTER to Cindy Klein-Banai, Associate Chancellor for Sustainability at cindy@uic.edu by May 10.

Reflections on Urban Exploring (“urbexing”) in Detroit
A blog post, with pictures, reflecting on exploring one of the city’s more interesting abandoned buildings. Having been in this structure myself, I was intrigued by the author’s insights. A simple web search will turn up several other sites documenting Detroit’s building history.

Observations of a Native Son
It’s a place of tensions. I’ve been traveling to Detroit lately, for fun, but I’ve been learning a lot along the way as well. I stay downtown with a friend who left his corporate job in New York, and relocated there over a year ago to be “part of the renaissance.” I grew up in an adjacent suburb and, until this year, have rarely returned.
