Growing Home seeks a hard-working farm assistant for a seasonal position at the Les Brown Memorial farm in rural LaSalle County, IL. The assistant will work with a farm team of 4 to 5 fulltime members assisting with all aspects of organic vegetable production, processing and delivery, and will also include the opportunity to participate in the education of our job training interns. The position will last 7-8 months beginning in spring 2013; the farm assistant will work 40-50 hours per week, including weekends, with negotiable time off.

Responsibilities will include seedling care, soil tillage, planting, harvesting, irrigation, supervision of small groups of program interns, driving and delivery, assisting at farmers market and events, hen care, grounds and equipment maintenance, processing and packing of fresh produce

Background:
Growing Home Inc is a non-profit organization that grows and markets organic vegetables as a way to train Chicagoans facing work barriers to re-enter the job market. Growing Home has two primary production facilities – the urban Wood Street Farm and training center in Chicago, and the rural Les Brown Memorial Farm in Marseilles. The Les Brown Memorial Farm is a small, diversified vegetable and herb production operation, using direct sales and Community Supported Agriculture as marketing strategies. Nearly 200 varieties of plants are grown on 3 acres of intensively managed land. The farm is uniquely scaled for minimum disturbance to the soil and environment, using human power and low impact tillage machines. The site serves as a secondary training facility for Growing Home’s transitional jobs program. All Growing Home production practices, vegetables, and herbs are certified organic.

Qualifications:

  • Interest in vegetable production
  • Illinois Driver’s License and outstanding driving record
  • Ability to perform hard physical labor
  • Ability to, and interest in, living with others
  • Interest in living in rural Illinois
  • Interest in working with Growing Home’s transitional job-training program participant

Compensation:

  • Salary based on 40 hours work/week at $9/hour
  • On-site (shared) housing available
