Education is a key strategy at Foresight for fostering sustainable transformation. We’ve tracked down some of our past educational program participants and interns to find out where they’ve gone, and what advice they have for others.
Bill Schleizer, Senior Director, Delta Institute
Bill Schleizer initially connected with Foresight in 2003, as he was finishing up his Masters degree in Environmental Analysis & Decision Making at Rice University. He interned with the organization until securing a position with the non-profit Delta Institute as an Associate in October 2004. In this role, he engaged in technical research and analysis of Great Lakes policy and environmental issues relating to pollution prevention and sustainable management of the regions watersheds.
During his seven years at Delta, Bill was promoted to Associate Director and most recently, Senior Director. He has had the opportunity to work on a variety of sustainability issues along the way, including water quality management, carbon markets, energy efficiency financing, sustainable agriculture, among others. He currently leads the Climate Change and Natural Resources work at Delta. This involves creating viable solutions to reduce the impacts of climate change, properly valuing ecosystem services, protecting and enhancing natural resources around the Great Lakes, and helping to create economic development opportunities. He is also responsible for managing research, writing grants, implementing programs, providing expertise and technical assistance to various programs, as well as fundraising.
In his down time, Bill enjoys improving his own triple bottom line with social activities with friends, defeating his coworkers in Delta office croquet tournaments, slowly redoing his condo with deconstructed materials, and playing tennis, volleyball, and badminton.
He believes his internship with Foresight really helped him develop those “soft professional skills” that are so often taken for granted by young professionals, such as networking and communicating with a diverse number of stakeholders. He admonishes future interns and students who come to Foresight to not only be ready to work and learn.
